Board approves series of course adoptions and a middle‑school communications pilot

The Derby Board of Education on May 12 approved a set of curriculum actions, including a middle‑school communications pilot and several course adoptions for Derby High School.
Dr. Holly Putnam Jackson, assistant superintendent of teaching and learning, presented the middle‑school communications course pilot for the 2025‑26 school year. The pilot would use two technology‑related texts and project sets including materials on typing.com. Dr. Putnam Jackson said the pilot “would not be implemented until next fall.” The board voted to approve the pilot.
The board also adopted curriculum materials for the Derby High School law and public safety pathway (Cengage materials for intro to law/criminal justice and professional development), AP biology (McGraw Hill), AP chemistry (Chemistry: A Molecular Approach), AP physics (Strategic Approach to College Physics) and a suite of physical education, health, wellness, nutrition and lifetime fitness resources (Goodheart‑Wilcox and supplemental media). Each adoption was moved, seconded and passed unanimously by the board.
During the physical‑education discussion a board member asked where required materials related to a recently passed law on video on fetal development would be placed; Dr. Putnam Jackson said staff would “take a look and bring back that video separately” and determine which course it best fits.
All of the curriculum adoptions and the pilot were approved by recorded voice votes that the board chair read as unanimous during the meeting.
