Derby’s workers’ compensation premiums show improvement; staff cites safety culture and insurer partnership

Derby Public Schools staff and the district’s insurance broker told the board May 12 that the district’s workers’ compensation experience has improved and that recent premium increases were modest compared with earlier years.
Burke Jones, director of operations, told the board the district’s next policy year showed “essentially a 9.22% decrease if payroll hadn’t gone up,” and noted premiums rose by less than 1% for the coming year once payroll changes were included.
Tyler Fee of Fee Insurance Group, the district’s broker, credited the district’s loss‑control work and a switch three years ago to United Heartland as the carrier. Fee said, “over the last 3 years, premiums have been up less than 2%,” and praised the district leadership and staff for quarterly claim reviews, safety reminders and ongoing loss‑control collaboration.
No formal vote was recorded on the item; staff presented the renewal and loss‑control update and stood for questions. Board members thanked staff and the broker for the work on claims management and safety initiatives.
