Focus groups underway for grade relocation; staff and parents involved in transition planning

Tiverton School District officials updated the committee on focus groups convened to plan an upcoming grade relocation, saying two sessions so far involved 18 participants each and included parents, four staff members and district administrators.
The focus groups, facilitated by district staff, are exploring logistics and school culture issues such as naming the grade community, transportation, hallway appearance and removal of some lockers, special events for students, bathroom procedures, PTO coordination, and positive behavior intervention systems. The district has already removed a section of lockers and is addressing appearance changes without additional expected funds.
Student supports were discussed as part of transition planning. Committee members requested inclusion of social‑emotional and other resources for students who may struggle with the move; staff confirmed student support will be part of the agenda for upcoming meetings. The district also said it has organized peer orientation activities involving current middle‑school students and leadership teams to help incoming students acclimate.
Next steps: Additional focus-group meetings are scheduled to cover recess, lunch, school safety, student resources and scheduling. The committee will receive further updates as planning continues.
