Tiverton School Committee members heard a first reading of a proposed classroom observation policy that would create a formal written request process for parents and other adults who want to observe a child’s classroom.
The presenter said requests would be submitted to the building principal or designee, visits would be limited to 30 minutes, and recording or photography would not be allowed. Observers would sign a confidentiality agreement, “acknowledging the legal requirement to protect the privacy of our students,” the presenter said, and a school administrator or designee would be present during observations.
Committee members asked whether the policy applies only to special education; the presenter said it would “encompass all observations.” Members also asked whether volunteer chaperones or general parent volunteers are covered; the presenter replied the policy is limited to observations and that a separate volunteer policy addresses other roles. A committee member confirmed the district already has a volunteer policy that includes confidentiality provisions.
The presenter said Tiverton did not previously have a standalone observation policy; regional policies may have been used for some programs. The item was presented as a read and will return for a future vote.
