Commissioner proposes removing coroner duties from prosecuting attorney; discussion to move to full commission

A proposal to remove coroner duties from the prosecuting attorney and place that responsibility with the county commissioners was described during a May 8 meeting of the Clallam County Community Town Hall Committee.
"And that is to just strike the duties of a, coroner from the prosecuting attorneys, duties, which would leave the job of a coroner with the with the county commissioners, and they can do with it what they wish," Commissioner Richards said, summarizing the committee's draft approach to the coroner question.
Committee members said the coroner item is on the full commission agenda for Monday and that committee members would review materials over the weekend to be prepared for that discussion. "I'll be spending some time to review that here over this weekend. Okay," Jim (committee member) said.
The meeting also included updates on outreach and survey work connected to the committee's charter review. Members reported modest public turnout at recent events: the Forks forum was described as "well attended" in the organizer's view but recorded about three attendees for the committee's purposes, and the group received only two questionnaire responses at one meeting. "We only got under 2 responses to the questionnaire that we passed out," a staff member said.
Committee members discussed pausing town-hall activity for now while awaiting Monday's full commission deliberations. Some members recommended the outreach committee go into hiatus until next steps are clear; others said town halls will be needed later when amendments require public hearings.
No motion or vote on changing coroner duties occurred at the subcommittee meeting; members said the item will be considered by the full commission in the coming meeting packet.
