Hays student Caleb King reports on Sister Cities youth summit in Washington, D.C.

Melissa Dixon, Director of the Hays Convention and Visitors Bureau and secretary of Hays Sister Cities, introduced Hays High senior Caleb King during the public-comment portion of the April 24 meeting to give an update on his attendance at the Sister Cities International Youth Leadership Summit.
Dixon said the Sister Cities program, founded in 1954, selects student nominees nationwide and that Hays Sister Cities provided a scholarship to cover Caleb's registration and travel. Caleb told the commission the summit at American University included lectures on intercultural communications and climate-change sociology, mentorship sessions and a diplomacy simulation at the Department of State in which he played a delegate representing a nonprofit.
Caleb described meeting students from large U.S. cities and other countries, attending museum and cultural visits and participating in leadership and career-development training. He said the experience influenced his college plans; he will attend the University of Kansas next semester and is considering international relations or a related social science.
Commissioners praised Caleb for representing Hays and the region. Melissa Dixon thanked the commission for supporting the Sister Cities scholarship program.
