Commissioner Jerry Joseph asked the commission to allow adults to use the Spot, the city—s new teen center, during weekday mornings so residents could gather for coffee, board games and socializing.
City staff and several commissioners discussed the request at length. Staff said the Spot was designed primarily for teens and that existing senior/adult programming is offered at the Gateway community center. City staff noted trade-offs: opening The Spot to adults before its teen hours would require supervision, janitorial coverage and possibly a budget amendment to add staffing for morning hours.
Commissioner Joseph said residents in the North end request a nearby, air-conditioned meeting place and noted the Spot already includes tables and informal seating that could accommodate adult users without additional programming. Vice Mayor Lamo, Commissioner Viscaro and others expressed concern about turning the teen space into a dual-use facility that could prompt competing demands for furniture and program priorities. Several commissioners suggested that missing amenities for adults at Gateway could be added there instead.
The commission asked staff to prepare a memo outlining the options, costs, staffing needs and an implementation timeline. The city manager said a budget amendment would be required and that, if the commission wanted to proceed, the earliest a change could be implemented would be after summer (September) because of summer-camp preparations and because a budget amendment requires two readings.
The commission did not take final action but directed staff to return with a recommendation that accounted for staffing, housekeeping, program conflicts and timing.
