Project Blue Worcester: lakes, water-quality monitoring and volunteer water-chestnut removals scheduled

Staff reported May 12 that Project Blue Worcester’s public process has concluded and that the department is moving to watershed-based plan development using public feedback gathered in three well-attended events.
The department announced volunteer water-chestnut removal events at Coes Reservoir on June 22 and Lake Quinsigamond on June 28 and July 19; volunteers will operate from kayaks and canoes and registration is required. Staff described water chestnut as an invasive species that can require repeated removal over many years to control.
Water-quality monitoring will collect data twice monthly on the city’s four main water bodies in support of long-term planning. The Worcester Cyanobacteria Monitoring Collaborative (WCMC) volunteer program has also started data collection with plans to monitor 28 sites this season, a new record for the program, staff said. The department posted meeting recordings, survey links and materials on the Lakes and Ponds program web page.
Staff also announced a family “learn to fish” festival June 22 at Green Hill Park and rotating “learn to fish” clinics in June and July funded by a MassWildlife grant. Staff encouraged pre-registration for volunteer and outreach events.
No regulatory actions were taken; the meeting items were outreach and implementation updates and event announcements.
