Commission approves plan to add bocce courts at Christopher Columbus Park; group to work with city on details

The Worcester City Parks and Recreation Commission voted May 8 to allow the Shrewsbury Street Italian Heritage Parade Committee to proceed with plans for two bocce courts at Christopher Columbus Park (called East Park).

Steve Christie, representing the parade committee, told the commission volunteers and businesses are ready to help with materials and labor. "There's not gonna be a lot of cost," Christie said, describing a prior temporary court and community support.

Assistant Commissioner Rob Antonelli said the administration recommends approval of the change in use because the proposed courts fit in a grassy area near the playground, do not affect drainage and can be developed with the group helping to fund and construct the courts. Antonelli said the city has no funding currently allocated for the project and that the group's volunteers and donated materials would cover most costs. "We would be looking for assistance from the group to help just maintain it and keep it there," Antonelli said, describing a partnership model similar to other community-built facilities.

The commission approved a motion that the group work with the City Administration on final plans and installation; commissioners emphasized that final details, including any city costs and maintenance responsibilities, will be worked out by staff and the applicant before construction. Commissioners also asked that the group engage with administration on seating, fencing or other nearby site features during final design.

Next steps: The parade committee and the Parks Department will finalize a plan and return to the administration with details; the commission will be provided final plans and will receive update and timeline from staff.
