Commission conditionally approves youth work kickoff at Polar Park; staff reports maintenance and summer events

The commission overseeing Polar Park conditionally approved an event application from the Worcester Community Action Council for a youth work summer kickoff planned for June 27, pending final agreement between the applicant and the Worcester Red Sox.

The approval was moved during the meeting; a commissioner said, “I’m gonna make the motion to approve,” and commissioners called for a vote. The transcript does not record a roll-call tally. Meeting staff said the event expects about 400 attendees and will serve young people ages 14 to 25.

The decision matters because the kickoff will be a large, ticketed gathering at Polar Park that requires coordination with the stadium operator and the team. Staff emphasized operational and safety checks that must be completed before the event proceeds.

Facilities staff gave a May 14 maintenance report to the commission outlining recent work at Polar Park. “Kitchen exhaust fan number 5 a, we replaced the belts,” a staff member reported, and said filters on the heating and air-conditioning units on the concourse, the nursing room and the command center were replaced. Staff also said they repainted dugouts, recertified kitchen exhaust hoods across the ballpark, and recertified two end-cap lifts that were nearing the end of their certifications.

Crew work included replacing a problematic double-swinging kitchen door and installing two fire-extinguisher cabinets with 5-pound extinguishers near the DCU Club entrance. Staff said they began installing 18 new handicapped seats in sections 207, 101 and 12 and expected that work to finish later in the week.

Staff also reviewed scheduled and recently held events at Polar Park. A team or stadium representative said the April 25 breakfast event hosted in the DCU Club drew about 250 people. Upcoming events listed during the meeting: the Massachusetts high-school baseball state championships (multiple division games) in June; a Food Truck, Beer and Beverage Festival on Saturday, June 28 featuring about 20 food trucks and 30 vendors; and a July 4 family fest with a screening of the movie The Sandlot followed by fireworks that staff said will begin once the film ends, “around 08:45.”

Commissioners clarified meeting scheduling: the group set a meeting for June 11 and agreed there would be no regular meetings in July or August unless something urgent arose and commissioners needed to be convened.

The commission’s approval for the June 27 youth kickoff was described as contingent on finalizing terms between the event organizer and the Worcester Red Sox; staff said they would not issue final permits until those details were settled.
