Council accepted a Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) NG911 upgrade grant totaling $137,519 to update call-handling systems, recorders and cover 24 months of operating costs for next-generation 9-1-1 interoperability. The city stated there is no required local match for the VDEM award.
Separately, the council approved an FY2025 SPAYVA (Spay Virginia) grant of $1,000 awarded to Radford City Animal Control to address overpopulation of unaltered pets and reduce shelter overcrowding and euthanasia rates. The council also accepted a Local Law Enforcement Block Grant (through the Justice Assistance Grant program) of $3,200 to purchase equipment for training scenarios.
All three measures passed on motions to adopt the appropriation ordinances. Council dispensed with formal readings of the ordinances after unanimous voice votes; the meeting record shows four affirmative votes and no opposition for each item.
