Patchogue trustees back oyster-restoration education project at Shorefront Park

A local conservation nonprofit told the Village of Patchogue Board of Trustees on Jan. 27 that it plans to place hundreds of oyster grow-out cages and reef structures near Shorefront Park and to run a yearlong student education program that will put spat-on-shell oysters into the Great South Bay.
The project, presented by Taylor Larson, an environmental educator for CCAP Environmental Association, and Chris Menenhouthan, the conservation director, would pair classroom work and field trips with hands-on oyster grow-out. "The program, tentatively titled the IELTS program, which stands for Introducing students to Long Island estuaries," Larson said, describing a one-year curriculum and class-based grow-out cages at Shorefront Park.
Organizers said the work is intended to serve two goals: restoration and education. "One adult oyster can filter up to 50 gallons of water in each day, removing pollutants and excess nutrients," Menenhouthan said, explaining the ecological rationale for reefs and grow-out stations. He described reef construction using cured oyster shell and perimeter bags and an experimental approach attaching cured shell to pavers mounted intertidally to test predation and survivability.
Presenters said the initial stocking would be about 10,000 animals per year, with expected mortality and multi-year recruitment into a persistent reef. The program would focus on local students from the Patchogue-Medford and Bayport-Blue Point school districts; each class would be assigned a cage at the Shorefront Park grow-out station and would monitor growth, collect basic data and participate in teacher workshops.
Larson and Menenhouthan also described public-safety and public-health limits: the animals in this restoration project are not intended for harvest or consumption and signage in multiple languages would notify the public. Menenhouthan advised using the New York State DEC shellfish maps to check open and closed harvest areas and explained that local nearshore areas are seasonally or permanently closed for public harvest at present.
Trustees and the mayor voiced support during the presentation. Trustee Keyes said, "Yeah. No. We're good. We're good to go," and trustees noted the village would integrate the program into parks-and-recreation and summer programming. The board did not take a formal vote or pass a resolution at the meeting; trustees indicated the plan could proceed without additional formal authorization that night.
The presenters asked the community for volunteers to help maintain cages in off-season months and to serve as project stewards; CTAP/CTEC staff said they would provide contact information and coordinate volunteer training. The organizers named a private foundation as an initial supporter and said they plan both reef-based restoration and a small pilot of intertidal "habitat pavers" to compare survival.
Why it matters: oyster restoration can improve water clarity, provide habitat and help stabilize shorelines while creating an experiential science curriculum for local students. Trustees said they expect progress reports in future meetings and encouraged continued coordination with parks and rec staff and with DEC maps and regulations.
What’s next: presenters said floating docks and some infrastructure are already in place and that they will return with progress updates; they also asked the village to help publicize volunteer opportunities and safety contacts for the restoration site.
