Okaloosa board warns state budget delays could complicate district planning

Superintendent Chambers and board members told the workshop that uncertainty in the Florida legislative budget process is complicating district planning and could compress deadlines for personnel and school-level preparations.
Chambers said the state’s budget was expected to be finalized sooner but that negotiations between the House and Senate have pushed timelines; “the state's deadline for the next year's budget, in essence, would be June 30,” he said. That timing affects when districts can advertise tentative budgets, finalize staffing projections and prepare for the next school year.
Board members said the district has prepared a conservative budget, with “other lists of items to be prepared” if adjustments are needed. One board member asked the superintendent to maintain alternate scenarios so HR and finance staff can act quickly when the Legislature completes its work.
Members urged the public to understand that delayed state action places districts in a difficult position for contracts, staffing and school-start planning. No formal board action was recorded; staff said they will continue developing a tentative budget and report back as state figures firm up.
