Building permits and municipal services update: few code violations, airport contract work and street-budget planning underway

At the Marshall City Council meeting, the Community Development and Code Committee reported a slow month for construction and code enforcement: seven building permits were issued, two demolition permits, seven electrical permits, one mechanical permit and five plumbing permits. The committee reported a combined project cost of about $1,903,387 and collected $2,530.75 in fees. The committee noted just one citation issued during the period — a parking-in-yard violation.
Committee members said the next code-enforcement hearing is scheduled for March 12 at 8:30 a.m., but they cautioned the date may change and encouraged residents to check the city website for confirmation.
The Municipal Services and Personnel Committee gave an update on several items. Committee members said they are working on an airport (ag operator) contract and have reviewed templates and contract proposals; staff and committees expect to draft a proposal for council consideration soon. The committee also discussed 2025 street budgeting, noting winter weather and freeze-thaw cycles are creating pressure on maintenance funds and that staff will produce an assessment and multi-year template to prioritize limited street dollars.
During audience business the council mentioned a recreational proposal for kayak/canoe rentals at the lake by the HAB Center; the council said a presentation from the vendor will be scheduled for March 4 for public questions and feedback.
No formal council action was recorded on these committee items during the meeting.
