City manager outlines Evergy wind purchase, Warrensburg received renewable-energy credit for 2024

City Manager reported that the City of Warrensburg participates in Evergy’s renewable energy program and currently purchases the equivalent of 50% of the city organization’s average electricity consumption in the form of wind energy.
The wind energy is produced at the Cimarron Bend Wind Farm in Kansas and is purchased at a fixed price of $17 per megawatt-hour under the city’s agreement. City Manager said the wind energy is sold onto the Southwest Power Pool and that the city is financially credited or debited each month depending on the market rate relative to the fixed purchase price. For 2024, the city’s purchases equated to about 59.5% of the city organization’s total energy use and produced a net credit to the city of $364 for the year. The city also receives renewable energy certificates (RECs) that it can retire to claim the renewable attribute.
The city manager said the original documentation he received showed a five-year agreement, though Evergy had verbally indicated there might be a longer, 15-year structure; he will follow up to confirm contract length and renewal options. He said the city could consider local renewable installations (for example, at high-energy-use sites such as wastewater treatment plants) but noted grant and financing conditions have changed and projects perform better where there is high onsite consumption to offset bills directly.
Councilmembers asked about potential local solar or wind installations and the manager said staff will pursue options and report back. The manager also said staff will follow up with Evergy about contract length and availability in the program.
