Council accepts Veterans Road Extension Phase 3 and approves traffic controls

Warrensburg City Council voted unanimously to accept the street and stormwater improvements built for Veterans Road Extension Phase 3 and to establish traffic control measures for the new roadway.
The ordinance accepting the public infrastructure for city maintenance, presented by project manager Jason McCarty, passed on a voice vote with Councilmembers Kushner, Osborne, Lattari, Jones and Euler recorded as voting yes. McCarty said the project was funded by state-allocated monies given to Johnson County Economic Development, constructed by Superior Bowen and overseen by city project management staff to meet current city standards.
The council also adopted an ordinance establishing traffic control for Veterans Road Extension Phase 3. The traffic commission recommended the controls, which include new stop signs at the intersection with 200 Road HH and previously installed stop signage at the route 13 bypass intersection. McCarty told the council that most of Veterans Road is posted at 35 mph and that the city is proposing to maintain 35 mph through the industrial sections while sections anticipated to redevelop residentially (near Cahill) remain posted at 25 mph.
Councilmembers discussed whether a short stretch approaching Cahill could remain at 35 mph and then reduce to 25 mph closer to development; McCarty said that detail could be referred back to the traffic commission for refinement. He also estimated signage placement typically every 200–300 feet and gave a preliminary installed cost of about $1,500–$2,000 per sign for posts and hardware. McCarty said the city has budgeted money for signage.
