The Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Personnel Committee approved the appointment of Dr. James Ahern, an NIU alumnus, as dean of the Graduate School, effective July 16, 2025, and forwarded the appointment to the full Board of Trustees.
Provost Laurie Eilish Piper described Ahern's record at the University of Wyoming, where he established centralized graduate education support, helped PhD enrollments grow 8.9% over five years and implemented mentoring and funding initiatives that increased enrollment of underrepresented populations by 47%. Ahern said NIU "gave me the foundation for everything I've been able to do in my career" and described his interest in returning to the Midwest to support NIU's graduate mission.
Trustees asked about strategies to increase graduate enrollment and to support students through national uncertainty in funding and immigration policy. Ahern said that despite uncertainty, demand for graduate‑level skills remains strong and that messaging about career opportunities and student supports can help prospective students decide to enroll.
The committee approved the appointment by motion and carried the item to the full board for final approval.
