Tollway begins master planning and early design work for I‑355/I‑88 interchange

Chief Engineering Officer Menar told the committee that the board awarded a master planning contract in January for the I‑355/I‑88 interchange and that work has begun.
"The purpose of the first phase is to provide a road map, for implementing this major project," Menar said, describing the master plan as a high‑level study to establish needs and footprint for what the final solution will be.
Menar said the interchange is a recurring congestion "hot spot" and that the study covers roughly six miles of I‑355 and five miles of I‑88. He said design teams will begin early design work on defined projects while the master plan is being finalized so the Tollway can identify and advance enabling projects such as right‑of‑way work, utility agreements and traffic improvements.
A committee member asked about an anticipated timeframe; Menar said staff are conducting inspections and traffic studies and do not have a definitive construction timeline yet but are working to move design work forward as soon as feasible.
