NIU committee approves faculty tenure and promotions; student trustee abstains

The Academic Affairs, Student Affairs and Personnel Committee of the Northern Illinois University Board of Trustees approved the university's recommendation for faculty tenure and promotion on May 8, 2025, forwarding the appointments to the full board for final action at a special meeting the same day.

Provost and Executive Vice President Laurie Eilish Piper told trustees the slate is the culmination of a yearlong review that begins with annual and third‑year reviews at the department level and proceeds through college councils and the faculty senate personnel committee before arriving at the board. "This item includes promotion of 14 faculty members from associate professor to the rank of professor, 21 faculty who were recommended for promotion from assistant professor to associate professor with tenure, 2 promotions of assistant professors to associate professor, and 2 hires at the rank of professor with tenure," Piper said.

Piper described the multi‑stage vetting: department personnel committees and chairs, college councils and deans, the university faculty committees and administrators, then trustee review. She explained that candidates who do not clear a promotion and tenure review generally do not reappear for that same promotion pathway, though there is an appeal and reconsideration process at the several review levels. "There is an appeal process, and that appeal process can take place at the different levels, and there's also a reconsideration process," she said.

Committee chair Veronica Herrero opened the roll call after reminding Student Trustee Aiden O'Brien that as a student trustee he must abstain on tenure items. The roll call recorded yes votes from trustees present and an abstention by O'Brien; the motion carried and the committee advanced the recommendations to the full board for approval.

Background: trustees and faculty leaders said the timing — at the end of the academic year and near commencement — was deliberate so the university can celebrate recipients while they are on campus. The provost and trustees also described the process timeframe: candidates typically prepare materials over the summer, submit in fall, review proceeds in fall and into spring, and arrives before trustees in late spring.

The committee framed this item as a formal action (motion and roll call) distinct from discussion: trustees asked procedural questions and the provost provided the statutory and internal process details; no policy changes were proposed in the meeting.
