The Wythe County Board of Supervisors on March 25 adopted a series of resolutions recognizing students who won state championships in indoor track and wrestling.
The board adopted separate resolutions honoring Emma Faulkner of George Wythe High School for winning the Virginia High School League Group 1A 1,000-meter indoor title in March 2025; Caleb Gibson of Rural Retreat High School for winning the Class 1A 120-pound wrestling title; Chaz Penroy of Rural Retreat High School for winning the Class 1A 144‑pound wrestling title; and Houston Baer of Rural Retreat High School for winning the Class 1A 106‑pound wrestling title.
The resolutions, presented by Chair Brian W. Vaughn and read into the record by staff, each commended the students’ athletic achievement and directed that a copy be incorporated into the official minutes. Chair Brian W. Vaughn said, “Congratulations, ma’am,” when Emma Faulkner was recognized and later told the assembled students and families that the board was “extremely proud of our young people.”
Each resolution was moved and seconded as the board took the items in succession; the board approved each by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The actions place the resolutions in the county’s official minutes as permanent recognition of the students’ titles.
The board’s acknowledgment follows the recent winter high school championships in Virginia and serves as formal recognition by Wythe County government. No additional actions or funding were attached to the resolutions.
