The board recognized eight school nurses and one nurse leader in a school board spotlight; district staff said Richland 1 is the only South Carolina district and one of two nationally to offer DAISY Awards for school nurses.
The Richland School District One board recognized school nurses and nurse leaders on Tuesday during a board spotlight commemorating National Nurses Week and National School Nurse Day.
Miss Shaniqua Coles, director of student support services, introduced recipients and nominees, and Dr. Witherspoon thanked nurses for ongoing work supporting student health and the district’s whole‑child approach. Coles said the Daisy Awards (run by the DAISY Foundation) recognize compassionate care and that Richland 1 "holds the distinction of being the only South Carolina school district and one of the only two districts in the United States to offer the Daisy Awards to school nurses. The program began in Richland 1 in May 2024," she said.
Coles named honorees and nominees including Nurse Sabrina Mosby (Arden Elementary), Nurse Eloise Langenhausen (Pine Grove Elementary), Nurse Neely Hawkins (Annie Burnside Elementary), Nurse Tammy Johnson (Carver Lyon Elementary) and Nurse Eunice Jones, who received DAISY Nurse Leadership Award but could not attend. Coles asked principals in the audience to stand and commissioners offered congratulations.
