Tibbetts Elementary students present council projects, fundraisers and community service to board

Tibbetts Elementary principal and student council members described student-led activities, fundraising and community-service projects including a traveling school store, chocolate sale and a pumpkin-patch assembly that supplies a pumpkin for every student.
Bridal Prost, principal at Tibbetts Elementary, and student council adviser Sam Fox presented the school’s student council work to the Elkhorn Area School District board, highlighting student leadership, fundraising and community-service events.
Prost said the council includes two members from each homeroom in grades 1–5, about 32 students, and that membership methods vary by grade: some homerooms select volunteers, others hold votes or require speeches. The council holds a monthly meeting and occasional additional meetings to organize school activities, Prost said.
Student council activities described included picture trivia and coloring contests, a traveling school store selling items such as “Smencils” (scented pencils) and small novelties, and an annual chocolate sale. Larger events have included an on-site pumpkin patch (organized during COVID so kindergarten classes could still participate), assemblies such as a magician performance, and a visit from the UW–Whitewater wheelchair basketball team to highlight disability awareness. Prost said student council provides one pumpkin to every student at the pumpkin patch event and has a laser show planned for May.
Prost and Sam Fox said student council funds come from the school store and the chocolate sale. They also described community service: council members assist at a Veterans Day program, serve breakfast, support holiday programs for families and organize a large food drive whose donations go to the Elkhorn food pantry.
Several student council members spoke to the board about what they enjoy. Ellie Price said, “We get to help decide the picture trivia topics. I like that we get to vote for different activities.” Another student, Ben, a fourth-grader, said, “I like being in student council because I like voting on things and helping to make decisions. It makes me feel like I'm helping people.” Sam Fox said the council is “kid driven” and praised the students’ ideas.

The board thanked the students and advisers. Members of the high school student council attending the meeting compared similarities between elementary and high school council activities and asked questions about officer roles and fundraising.
