Resident raises safety, maintenance issues including streetlights, missing dumpster lids and park repairs

Tom Sullivan of 751 Syracuse used the citizen participation period at the May 12 University City council meeting to list infrastructure and maintenance concerns across the city’s east side.
Sullivan said several streetlights are out or not working properly, including a light at Olive and Kingsland, multiple lights along Kingsland, one on Chamberlain east of Kingsland and one in the Acker Walkway at Enright. He reported a streetlight pole without an electrical-cover at 729 Westgate, another at 739 Westgate and one at the southeast corner of Westgate and Vernon across from the fire station, and warned that missing covers can be hazardous: "A missing cover once led to a youngster getting electrocuted in the city." He also said utility wires are hanging down in places.
Sullivan reported multiple dumpsters with broken or missing lids in alleys near Heman, Leland, Bartner, Sailor and Kingsland and on Heman near Metcalfe Park, saying that rain worsens the mess. He urged the city’s inspectors to patrol alleys monthly, noting the city employs inspectors.
He also raised park concerns, saying Lewis Park’s fountain is crumbling and requires repairs and that the Rain Man sculpture and its brickwork need tuckpointing and planting in its planter. Sullivan said a high-visibility loop storefront known as the Cicero Space will be vacant for eight years next month and criticized the long vacancy at that site.
Council acknowledged Sullivan’s remarks; no formal action was recorded during the meeting on these items. Sullivan’s comments were made during the non-agenda citizen participation period; one speaker had signed up to speak.
