City staff: driving range grading, drainage work ongoing; opening depends on budget and finish work

Parks, Recreation and Public Maintenance Director Darren Gertler updated the University City City Council on April 28 on the status of the city’s driving range project, saying rough grading and additional dirt placement are underway, but topsoil, drainage and erosion controls remain to be completed.
Gertler said crews are hauling and spreading dirt to balance the range, installing 6 inches of topsoil where needed for vegetation, and that final engineering drawings are being requested from the excavator to confirm finished grading and proper slopes for drainage. He said irrigation will be required and that the city will need to choose between sod, sprigs or seeding.
Gertler also noted the access/entrance road is collapsing in places because of heavy truck traffic hauling dirt and that sweeping has not fully removed the tracked mud. He said drainage work by the contractor is underway but additional details remain to be resolved between the city, the excavator and the developer.
When asked whether council can accelerate the timeline via budget action, City Manager Ray Rose said staff would work with Gertler and the finance team to identify the earliest possible opening date and try to open as soon as practicable, even if the driving range is not yet in an ideal finished condition. Gertler said a timeline for completion depends on budget and assignment of responsibilities and that staff hoped to have a final report in the coming weeks.
