St. Louis County plans flashing beacons at Clayton Road crosswalk near Lafayette High School

City staff told the Board of Public Safety that St. Louis County has added the Clayton Road crosswalk at Lafayette High School to a county-funded list of locations slated for rapid rectangular flashing beacon installations.
Public Works Director Rick Brown said the county informed the city within the last 30 days that the crosswalk — at the East driveway of Lafayette High School — is included in a county project to install beacons at multiple county sites and that the county intends to complete the installation by the end of 2026.
Board members asked about maintenance because several existing flashing beacons in the region have experienced long outages after being struck or losing parts. Captain Mundell indicated that because the county would own and operate the new beacons, the county would be responsible for maintenance; Brown said the city would follow up to request the county also schedule repairs to previously damaged beacons on Manchester Road and Old Fairway.
Board members asked staff to communicate the county timetable to residents. Brown said the department would post an announcement on the city website and social media to clarify that this is a county-led project and to direct resident inquiries to the county council member as appropriate.
