Planning commission backs Fellowship of Wildwood lobby expansion and elevator addition

The Planning and Zoning Commission voted to approve the Department of Planning's recommendation supporting an expansion of Fellowship of Wildwood's lobby and a small elevator addition to the adjacent school building, finding the proposal complies with the site's Planned Residential Development (PRD) overlay and existing design criteria.
Mr. Vinic, Department of Planning, said the site is roughly 30 acres and already contains a sanctuary, a two-story school building, playgrounds, a centralized wastewater plant and stormwater features. The expansion would increase lobby/meeting/hospitality space and add a roughly 140-square-foot elevator shaft to the school building; the applicant intends to match the church's existing brick architecture and colors.
"There is no change to the parking because, again, these areas are considered accessory to the primary use," Mr. Vinic said, noting the parking supply was calculated based on sanctuary seating (500 seats) and the expansion would not alter that calculation. The department said the expansion fits the governing PRD standards and design criteria.
The project is scheduled for review by the city's Architectural Review Board on the coming Thursday for architecture details, and the department said utilities and other service agencies reviewed and commented on the plan. Mayor Mary Gaetano moved to adopt the department recommendation; Commissioner Helfry seconded. The roll call vote was recorded as unanimous in favor.
The commission's recommendation does not change the site's access, parking or major site utilities; final architectural details will be set by the Architectural Review Board as scheduled.
