The Dunkirk Common Council described plans to host a Boys and Girls Club–run summer youth program at the firemen's grounds at Point Gratiot and outlined how the city will provide space while the club administers the program.
Deputy director of economic development EJ said the city is collaborating with the Boys and Girls Club of Orange County to provide facilities; the club will operate the program, hire staff and manage registrations. The program will run Monday through Friday from July 7 through Aug. 15, a six-week schedule designed to mirror the city’s former Camp Grove schedule. EJ said sign-ups and payments are handled through the club and that Alexis in the youth and recreation department will help redirect inquiries.
Council members raised concerns about cost and the club’s policy that signups are for the entire summer. The council referenced published fee guidance reported at the meeting as $400 for one child, $750 for two and $1,050 for three children for the full six-week session; EJ noted that equates to roughly $67 per week for one child, about $63 per week for two children, and about $58 per week for three children. Council members asked whether a shorter weekly option would be possible; EJ said fees and staffing are set by the Boys and Girls Club and that the city is providing space to reduce municipal cost.
The council did not vote on program administration or fees at the meeting; the Boys and Girls Club will continue to manage registration and billing.
