The Oneonta Airport Commission submitted a written recommendation and briefed the Common Council on March 18, urging the council to move forward with funding for a parallel taxiway.
Len, speaking for the commission, said the commission’s recommendation is tied to the capital-improvement plan and current obstruction-clearing work. Commission members told the council that the parallel taxiway must be installed before the runway can be extended; they said the airport’s current runway length is about 4,200 linear feet and that some users are seeking roughly 5,100 linear feet to accommodate larger aircraft and increased charter traffic.
Commissioners and staff said available FAA funding will be applied to engineering work on a Wallace Road relocation; they described growing private interest in building hangars and a potential 4- to 5-acre economic development pad that would be opened once a service road and taxiway are in place. Commission members said the airport already offers three-phase power and high-capacity internet at the site, which they said makes the location attractive to private partners.
The commission will prepare a fuller presentation for a future council meeting; the council did not take a funding vote on March 18.
