Nathan Santana and Joseph Evans, residents of 56 Maple Street, asked the Oneonta Common Council on March 18 to renew a special-use permit for their fraternity chapter at that address.
At a public hearing before Mayor Dranek and the council, Santana said he and Evans represent Phi Kappa Psi and read a prepared statement asking the council to renew the permit so the fraternity can “continue to effectively function as a community, a fraternity, and give back” to Oneonta.
Santana described the chapter’s local activities, saying the group performs biweekly street cleanups, participates in the city’s Into the Streets volunteer event, takes part in an annual construction event that raises awareness and support for local food banks, and seeks to model leadership for local youth.
After the pair finished, Mayor Dranek asked whether anyone else wished to speak on the item. With no further public comment, the mayor closed the public hearing. The council did not take a vote on the permit renewal during the meeting.
The public hearing record will be part of the council’s packet as the council considers the permit renewal at a later date.
