The Meade County Board of Commissioners voted to supplement the Highway Department budget by $1,000,000 to perform interim repairs on New Underwood Road, approving Resolution 2025‑14 at the May 13 meeting.
Highway Superintendent Troy Eastman and Commissioner Leggett described the work as a “band‑aid” that will cover roughly the first 7 miles of the roadway with milling, base stabilization and a chip seal (an aggregate/bituminous sealing process). Troy Eastman estimated the improvement should extend the life of the road approximately three to five years; full reconstruction of the corridor would cost far more — Eastman cited a county estimate of roughly $66 million for complete reconstruction, which is outside the county budget.
Commission members discussed timing and staging: the county awarded a $3,000,000 contract earlier in the year to reconstruct portions of Haines Avenue (two miles reconstructed plus four miles overlay), and commissioners said that work will be coordinated with planned improvements to limit repeated disturbance. The highway department will issue a project schedule once contractors propose timing; commissioners noted contractors may choose to begin work this year or next.
The resolution passed on a unanimous voice vote. Highway staff said the project is intended to preserve a heavily used rural connector and buy time while longer‑term financing and state coordination for reconstruction are explored.
