VDOT representative updates board on potholes, Darden Point pipe and millings plan

A Virginia Department of Transportation assistant residency administrator briefed the Southampton County Board of Supervisors on road projects and operational issues during the Feb. 25 meeting.
The VDOT representative said the agency and the county coordinated snow response and then moved into a large pothole repair effort, including a “pothole blitz” on Route 58. He reported that a cross pipe replacement at Darden Point was delayed after a protected species was found in the pond; DEQ clearance has been received and the pipe is scheduled for replacement in March.
He said Storage Station Road is scheduled for a surface treatment in fiscal 2026 from Route 58 up to the top-of-hill intersection and that crews will also address flaggy run sections and perform patching ahead of the full surface treatment. He noted the group is monitoring roads and performing interim patching in advance of planned surface work.
On asphalt millings, the representative said VDOT’s contractor will be the source; VDOT will give the contractor contact information so county staff can coordinate where and when to collect millings once contractor stripping begins in spring. He said VDOT would not directly deliver millings to the county but would provide scheduling and contractor contact details.
The VDOT official also told the board the agency had experienced a significant budget drawdown tied to a busy winter season, saying the statewide account was roughly $400 million overspent due to storms and emergency work, which affected resource planning.
The board and VDOT discussed pending traffic studies and turn-lane reviews; some items were still in traffic engineering’s queue for formal review. VDOT encouraged constituents to use a formal 1804ROADS submission process to create a trackable work order for specific complaints and requests.
