The Scott County Board of Supervisors approved an exemption request allowing Duffield Fire & Rescue to perform advanced life support (ALS) skills aboard a transport unit in limited circumstances when an EMT is not available on the vehicle.
A Duffield Fire & Rescue representative asked the board to grant the exemption so the department could be covered in “5% or less” of calls where multiple patients require splitting personnel and an EMS transport might otherwise lack an EMT on board. The presenter said the request is limited, infrequent and intended to avoid leaving patients unattended.
The request relies on state emergency medical services regulations; a representative of the Virginia Office of EMS (on the phone) was available for technical questions during the meeting.
A motion to approve the exemption was moved and seconded. The board approved the request by voice vote: “Everybody, by way of saying aye. Aye. Opposed? None opposed. Motion carries. Exemption granted.”
Board members said the exemption was temporary, administrative in scope and would not alter the department’s regular operating plan.
