Resident urges action on Delta-THC and vaping products; council asks staff to evaluate ordinances

Ingleside — During the citizens participation portion of the March 20 meeting, resident Sheree Blanton warned the council that Delta-8, Delta-9, Delta-10 and related products were becoming widely accessible in the community and said the items pose a risk to minors. Blanton also expressed concern about vaping devices potentially laced with fentanyl.
"These substances are continuously altered to bypass existing regulations," Blanton said, urging the council to make it harder for minors to obtain the products through enforcement, fines and education. She offered her experience and assistance; she told the council she has more than 17 years clean and volunteered to help host intervention and education efforts.
Following public comment, council members asked staff to review whether local ordinances can be updated to address the specific concerns raised and whether police have observed related problems. One council member asked staff and the police chief to prepare an agenda report and an update for a future meeting so the council can determine appropriate local responses.
City staff noted that many of these products are currently legal under state and federal law and that options may be limited, but the council requested staff research and return with recommended next steps and any possible ordinance language for the council’s consideration.
