Council approves Live Oak solar-lighting installation, caps contract at $250,000

The City Council of Ingleside voted to award a contract to install solar lighting at Live Oak Park and authorized staff to proceed with the project at a not-to-exceed amount of $250,000.

Gary, a city staff member, presented a proposal from the lighting vendor and a map showing proposed pole locations around Benny Deagle Drive and the Live Oak Park parking and play areas. He said the design would install poles around the parking lot, light play areas and the disc-golf course, and improve overall park safety and night use. Gary told the council the quoted price fit within the CIP budgeted amount of $250,000 and that the vendor's quote came in at about $207,000.

Council members discussed technical and coverage details before the vote. Council member Pruitt, citing electronics experience, asked about battery storage for multi-day low-sunlight periods; Gary said the system vendor had advised roughly a week of limited-sunlight reserve, and staff clarified that limited sunlight (not total absence of sun) still charges panels. Council members also asked about placement relative to the road, tree canopy impacts on panels, coordination with planned lighting at tennis courts and the prospect of phased work to increase coverage.

Council member Deal moved to award the project; Council member Pruitt seconded. Council members voted by roll call: Deal, Wilson, Pruitt, John Salinas and Julio Salinas voted aye; Mayor Pro Tem Tim Long and Mayor Domi/Adame were absent. The motion carried.

Council members and staff noted the installation would aid evening recreational use and public safety and that the project leaves room for future adjustments and additional poles if coverage gaps remain after installation. The council asked staff to return with follow-up evaluations after installation if additional lighting is needed.
