County staff recommend appropriations for fire and sheriff grants; school gym request withheld pending quotes

Staff recommended appropriating most submitted requests but withholding the school board’s $65,000 until the finance department has received and approved two vendor quotes. "Delaying this approval may make it difficult for them to schedule the work during the summer," staff said, and asked that any approval include a contingency that finance receive and approve the two quotes.
Staff also reported the county received $11,137 from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs and recommended those funds be appropriated to volunteer fire departments. The sheriff’s office has been awarded $3,200 from a local law-enforcement grant to purchase a mobile data terminal and mount; staff recommended appropriating those funds to the sheriff’s budget.
A supervisor moved to approve the appropriation requests except the school’s $65,000 refinishing request; the motion was seconded and approved. Board members and staff discussed alternatives for the school to identify funding, including booster-club assistance or internal reallocation, and reiterated the contingency that finance verify quotes before funds are released.
