City manager: Duggar Field master plan, state grant work continuing; La Vega Little League shifts fields

City Manager Yost told the Bellmead Parks and Recreation Board that preliminary master‑plan drawings for Duggar Field are forthcoming and that the city continues to press the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on a pending grant.

Yost said the drawings are at an early stage and the city is working to avoid placing structures or access drives in the wrong locations as the master plan is developed. He said the plans may be presented to the city council at either the May meeting or a joint June meeting, depending on scheduling and further review. “These are very preliminary, but what we are trying to do is master plan it so that we don't put a building in the wrong spot or a driveway or a parking lot in the wrong spot,” Yost said.

On the Texas Parks and Wildlife grant, Yost said staff and consultants have finished preliminary drawings and that city staff continue to follow up with the state agency; he said the grant process is moving more slowly than the city would like but remains active. He identified Karen and consultants as the staff working with the state and said further discussions with the board and council will follow as the grant advances.

Yost also addressed recent activity at city ballfields. He said La Vega Little League chose not to renew its contract “by their own decision” and is coordinating with La Vega Independent School District to use ISD fields. The change, Yost said, gives Bellmead an opportunity to rehabilitate city fields and allow other rentals; he noted the city hosted a Special Olympics event last year and that short‑term rentals remain an option for groups that do not need daily or weekly use.

Board members asked clarifying questions about field usage and rental availability; Yost and Corey described the city’s intent to rehab fields and permit occasional rentals while broader field‑use plans are finalized.
