Lee's Summit Fire Station 3 tour highlights living quarters, equipment and April open house

Assistant Chief Jim Eden and Battalion Chief Ben Hicks led a tour of Lee's Summit Fire Station 3 during a city presentation that described the station's design, staffing and public open-house plans.

The station was constructed as part of the 2016 no-tax-increase general obligation bond for public-safety initiatives and was occupied in August 2020, the chiefs said. Station 3 includes administrative offices for an assistant chief and a captain (the captain oversees the station’s fire truck and ambulance), training rooms, a shared living and kitchen area for crews working 48-hour shifts, and separate sleeping quarters with 11 bedrooms to allow for future expansion.

Chiefs described facilities intended to support long shifts and firefighter health: an on-site laundry room, a workshop for tool maintenance, a fitness area, a room for filling self-contained breathing-air tanks, an extractor machine to decontaminate bunker gear to reduce cancer risk, and individual lockers for bunker gear storage. The station also houses Med 3 (an ambulance relocated from Station 7) and Pumper 3; staff said Station 3 has become one of the busiest stations on the city’s west side. The station’s open house is scheduled for April 19 from 9 a.m. to noon at Fire Station No. 3, 2023 Northwest Shamrock Avenue; the event will include station tours and a walk-through inflatable house for fire-safety education.
