Council adopts phase 2 of airport master plan; airport shows new regional name and Summit Aero branding

Lee's Summit City Council unanimously approved Resolution 25-08 on Tuesday to adopt Phase 2 of the airport master-plan update, a package staff said is required by the Federal Aviation Administration to show future facilities and protected airspace.
“Phase 2… is the airport layout plan. What the airport layout plan is is really a graphical representation of our airport master plan,” a city aviation official, identified in the meeting as Mr. Anderson, said while explaining the FAA deliverable. The ALP incorporates a property map, obstruction and obstacle analyses, a runway approach feasibility study and a wildlife hazard assessment.
Anderson said a selected site for a future air-traffic-control tower is Site Number 2 on the northeast part of the airport, shown on the ALP as an orange circle. He also updated council on construction: Hangar 2 is expected to be ready in June or July, and city staff expect to advertise a terminal construction project within about 30 days, with federal dollars identified for that terminal.
Anderson told council the FAA has issued a “letter of no objection” on the airport's name change and that charts and pilot resources are beginning to show the new name, “Kansas City Lee's Summit Regional Airport.” He also displayed a new city-developed brand for the municipal FBO services called Summit Aero.
Council adopted the resolution to authorize the mayor to approve successor directors for the new Longview Community Improvement District and then adopted the airport master-plan Phase 2 resolution by unanimous roll-call vote.
The ALP work will guide where hangars and terminal facilities may be located and establishes the property and obstruction easements needed to preserve approaches and lower approach minimums for Runway 36, staff said. The airport manager also noted an ongoing wildlife hazard assessment and earlier work on wildlife control.
The council voted 9-0 to adopt Resolution 25-08 and related items on the airport; no dissenters were recorded.
