The Veterans Disability and Human Services Commission approved purchasing a powder-coated steel bench to honor former mayor Skip Hall during its May 14 meeting in Surprise.
Commissioner Maxwell proposed using commission funds to buy the bench; after discussion about available funds and placement options, Commissioner Mansfield moved to proceed and the motion was seconded. A voice vote followed and the motion carried.
Danielle, a city staff member, told commissioners the Parks and Recreation donation program offers a 24-inch box tree for $850, a 36-inch box tree for $2,000, a powder-coated steel bench for $5,000 or a $75 paver in the Veterans Commemorative Plaza at Marley Park. Commissioners discussed visibility of placement and noted Marley Park primarily serves that community; staff said they would work through the application and placement options and could place the bench in a city park with a plaque included.
Staff reported the commission’s remaining budget for the fiscal year was roughly $5,000 and that most VetFest costs were covered by sponsorships; final VetFest invoices were still being settled. Commissioners agreed the bench purchase fit within the available funds and directed staff to begin the ordering and placement process, including the bench plaque inscription.
The commission did not identify a final bench location at the meeting and noted that staff would coordinate placement with Parks and Recreation and the bench-donation application process.
