The Beacon City Council voted to authorize the City Administrator to execute an extension agreement with Royal Karting, the private contractor that collects residential garbage and recycling for the city. The contract extension holds the collection price to a 1% increase for 2026, according to city staff.
City staff told the council the city has contracted with Royal Karting since 2019 and that the 1% increase reflects improved measurement of the tonnages the city pays for and general unpredictability in the economy. Staff said the current contract runs through the end of the year; the extension would lock in the modest increase for budgeting purposes.
Councilors expressed appreciation for staff’s work to keep increases low. The council moved and seconded the authorization and then voted to approve execution of the extension agreement.
Separately, the city administrator announced several operational items: a bulk garbage drop‑off program running May 17 through Sept. 20 for residents up to an approved weight if taxes are current; South Avenue Park rehabilitation work beginning with court resurfacing and a new restroom, with most work to be completed by July 4 and the restroom finished later in the summer; and recruitment for school crossing guards with morning pay at $18/hour and afternoons at $20/hour through the police department.
