The Beacon City Council on Monday referred a revised local law addressing self‑storage facilities to the City Planning Board and Dutchess County Planning and scheduled a public hearing on the proposal.
City staff said the revised local law — prepared after public comment and workshop discussion — would make self‑storage permitted in the GBLI and HI zoning districts except on parcels with frontage on Main Street, Fishkill Avenue, Beacon Street, Herbert Street and Tyrande Avenue; on those fronting streets the use would be allowed only by special permit with criteria the council reviewed at prior meetings.
City attorney and staff recommended sending the revised local law back to the planning boards for a formal report, recommendation and a public hearing. Councilors moved to refer the item and schedule a hearing; the council then voted to refer the revised law for review and to calendar the public hearing.
Councilors praised staff for summarizing the prior discussions and edits to the draft law. One councilor asked for clarification that the May 19 public hearing could be adjourned if county or city planning comments were not available before that date; staff confirmed the hearing could be adjourned.
The referral starts the formal review process at the planning board level and begins the statutory review timeline with the county planning board.
