Regional EMS councils to consolidate; Western Virginia EMS Council notes pharmacy transition and NRV 911 dispatch realignment discussed

He said the EMS system is moving from the current 11 regional EMS councils toward seven new entities to align with Virginia Department of Health districts and Healthcare Coalition maps; existing councils' funding will be extended through the end of the calendar year while a request-for-proposal process opens for organizations that want to manage the new regional councils.
On pharmacy procurement, Chief English said agencies have an April 15 deadline for a pharmacy transition and that the regional council is finalizing processes to allow agencies to order medications through an online portal once distribution inspections and DEA approvals are complete.
Commissioners also heard from NRV 911 joint advisory representatives who said they are pressing for operational improvements after commission members submitted calls for review. Jason (NRV 911/dispatch oversight) described a realignment intended to reduce delay caused by dispatchers trying to narrow incident details: "we may send out a call, motor vehicle crash unknown injuries, and then a minute or 2 later, you may get an update... we may send out more motor vehicle crashes than you're used to. We're gonna try to just push more of them out as unknown earlier." He said the committee plans site visits to other 911 centers to learn best practices.
Commissioners noted the need for cooperation across agencies to address dispatch timing and interdepartment coordination. No formal regional governance decision was made by the commission; the briefing was informational and intended to keep local chiefs informed of state-level restructuring and operational deadlines.
