EDA staff report 1,589 active broadband passings; Gigabeam and AP place fiber in county

Staff reported 1,589 active broadband passings in Montgomery County, completion of a key railroad crossing splice, 284 miles of fiber by Gigabeam and 36 miles by Appalachian Power, and AEP testing that will add serviceable passings once turned up.
Montgomery County Economic Development Authority staff provided an update on broadband buildout and service activations in the county.
Carly (staff member) reported 1,589 active passings, an increase of 74 since the March meeting. Staff said the recent progress included a splice at the final railroad crossing that had been delaying service in one batch of addresses; Gigabeam and Appalachian Power coordinated to splice and route fiber to serve an apartment complex across the tracks temporarily, and Appalachian Power plans to run its own fiber afterward.
Staff reported Gigabeam has deployed about 284 miles of fiber in Montgomery County and Appalachian Power has installed just over 36 miles. Carly said AEP is testing a service area that contains 330 passings; once that area is turned up, staff said the related batch can be closed out and the total serviceable passings will increase further.
No board action was required; staff said construction and testing are ongoing and that they will provide further updates when the AEP testing area is activated.
