The Matthews County Board of Supervisors on April 17 approved rezoning a 0.59‑acre property at 10541 Buckley Hall Road from Village Mixed‑Use to Business‑2 after a public hearing and a unanimous vote.
Applicant Jermaine Ware told supervisors he intends to operate an equipment‑rental business that serves homeowners and contractors. “I'm applying to bring revenue to the county,” Ware said. He said the property previously housed moving/storage and pack‑and‑ship activity and that the proposed use would fit a commercial corridor that contains other B‑2 properties across the street.
Planning staff noted the request will create a nonconforming setback condition under the zoning code (the existing structure sits inside the setback formulas for B‑2) and recommended the applicant pursue a conditional use permit if site changes are needed. The planning commission had previously recommended denial of the rezoning and suggested the applicant apply for a CUP instead; the supervisors voted to rezone.
Why it matters: Supervisors said they want to attract small businesses and tax base activity to central Matthews. The rezoning clears administrative hurdles for Mr. Ware to move forward; if the business requires building or site changes the applicant may need additional permits or a CUP.
