Oldsmar council asks city manager to draft opposition to bills that would eliminate regional planning councils

At its April 15 meeting Oldsmar City Council voted to direct the city manager to draft a formal letter expressing opposition to legislative proposals that would remove the Florida Regional Planning Council Act (Chapter 186, sections 501–515) from state law.
The council discussed companion bills in the Florida Legislature — a Senate measure and a House measure — that proponents have proposed would eliminate statutory language authorizing regional planning councils. Council members said they preferred a formal written position from the city rather than informal outreach. After brief discussion the council approved a motion directing the city manager to prepare a letter for the mayor to send to state legislators expressing council opposition.
City staff will draft the letter with input from the city attorney and provide it to council for review. The clerk noted that the senate bill had advanced through a committee earlier in the week but still required additional committee or rule review to progress.
The council’s action is intended to communicate Oldsmar’s interest in preserving regional planning arrangements should the bills advance further in the legislative session.
