The Genesee County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution recognizing May 2025 as Jewish Heritage Month in Genesee County, following public comment from a local Jewish community leader and a floor amendment to recognize that leader by name.
During public comment, Steven C. Lowe, executive director of the Flint Jewish Federation, told the board that the federation “is the hub of the Flint and Genesee County Jewish community” and described local services including transportation, congregate and mobile meals, assessment and referral services and collaboration with other local institutions. Lowe noted the federation’s broader humanitarian work and the community’s response when Flint suffered its water crisis.
Later in the meeting, the board read and discussed a resolution acknowledging the 350‑year contributions of Jewish people to American culture, the local history of Jewish institutions in Genesee County and named local volunteers and organizations that have supported arts, education and social services. Commissioner Dr. Beverly Brown proposed a friendly amendment to add Steven C. Lowe to the text; the board approved the amendment and then passed the resolution as amended.
The resolution’s text, as read at the meeting, cited historical references discussed in public comment and encouraged county departments to engage in celebratory activities and appropriate recognitions during May. The clerk was directed to provide a copy of the resolution to each city, village and township in Genesee County and to county clerks across Michigan.
The resolution was brought forward by the county’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Commission; commissioners said the item was not taken through committee so the full text was read aloud on the floor before a vote.
Public comment and the board’s discussions referenced local names and events, including the Flint Jewish Federation’s community services. The amendment to name Steven C. Lowe in the resolution passed on the floor; the full resolution was then adopted by voice vote.
