An electrician’s preliminary estimate for the lighting installation was described as between $10,000 and $20,000; the committee said parts of the project could be eligible for capital-budget requests rather than being fully funded through arts account lines.
The commission’s grants director has submitted a T‑Mobile placemaking grant for the gallery lighting; award notifications are expected in August, and the committee aims to have fixtures installed in time for a December exhibition if funding is secured. Committee members said the T‑Mobile application is one of several funding avenues under consideration and that they will run fixture options by the commission once available.
Because the city commission is not yet a 501(c)(3), members discussed using fiscal sponsors (Friends of the City, Arts Society of Kingston or other nonprofits) to qualify for foundation grants and accept donations. The mayor’s office indicated it will apply for the city to have its own 501(c)(3) file at some point this year, but committee members noted this process may take time.
Committee members also reported a successful textile-arts project run with the Arts Society of Kingston as fiscal sponsor and noted ongoing conversations about sponsorship forms and donor procedures to avoid conflicts of interest under current city rules.
The committee requested additional input from the arts commission as they prepare budget requests and finalize sponsorship templates for programming and capital work.
