Public Art Committee members told the Kingston Arts Commission they have arranged visits by two painting conservators to assess the condition of a municipal collection and to generate budget estimates needed for conservation grants.
“DJ and I know painting conservators who have agreed to schedule a visit to look at the collection and give a sort of ballpark,” a committee member said during the commission’s report. The committee said the conservator visits are scheduled and will inform next steps for grant writing.
Committee members discussed seeking funding through Greater Hudson Heritage, the Hudson Valley conservancy network (listed in the report as Greater Hudson Heritage Association Network) and VISCA, and noted potential institutional partners including SUNY New Paltz and the Dorsky Museum. The group also discussed using faculty-led fellowships or paid student internships to support conservation work, while recognizing that local institutions do not run formal art conservation degree programs and that some specialized conservation testing would require external expertise.
The committee said it will produce condition assessments, define scope and budget estimates, then work with the city’s grants director to prepare funding applications. Members suggested the committee will rely on support and advisory input from the Kingston Arts Commission as the new committee formalizes its governance and selection protocols.
The committee report also covered governance items: it unanimously approved an interim vice chair and plans to develop selection criteria and procedural templates (calls for artists, selection panels, registrarial guidance) in upcoming meetings.
