Recreation staff report spring programming surge, stadium sponsorships and BMX updates

Kingston recreation staff reported that spring programming is underway, facility use is high after a recent open house, and new sponsorship opportunities for the city’s stadium have attracted business interest.
Staff said adult softball started the week of the meeting; volleyball and tennis registration is open; the youth basketball season was entering its fifth week; and camps and junior naturalist programs are filling quickly, with at least one session already full. Staff also said the beach is expected to open on Father’s Day weekend and the pool typically opens the weekend before camp (pool opening referenced as June 28), subject to staffing and weather.
The department described a successful open house at the new stadium facility, calling it a significant upgrade from the previous space and noting the facility is frequently in use. Staff said concession and vendor operations will be managed through vendor applications and a preapproved vendor list so renters can use approved vendors without repeated checks. Electrical hookups are installed to accommodate food trucks.
Staff said a sponsorship program for the new stadium was launched with four tiers—bronze, silver, gold and platinum—priced roughly between $600 and $900 annually, with placement options inside and outside the stadium depending on tier. The commission was told the program has generated interest from businesses and multiple applications.
On BMX, staff reported contact with program lead Mike Henderson and said Henderson may present at the June meeting or provide a written update. Commissioners were also updated on seasonal staffing efforts for pools, lifeguards and program staff; staff said they were conducting interviews and that hiring remained a priority in advance of the summer season.
The commission thanked staff for the updates and closed the item.
