Choctaw County commissioners approved a recommendation by the county engineer to apply for a Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) grant for resurfacing and widening on Tuscona Road, a corridor that provides access to federal lands, the engineer said.
The county engineer described the project as meeting FLAP criteria and said the current call for projects included unusually full federal funding this year, though reviewers will prefer proposals that show obligated matching funds. The engineer estimated the full project cost at about $2 million and suggested submitting the application in phases to allow partial awards.
Commissioners discussed using available Rebuild Alabama surplus funds as a local match if required and directed the engineer to update the county's Rebuild Alabama plan if necessary. The engineer requested the commission's approval to file the application by a May 31 submission date; the commission moved, seconded and approved the request by voice vote.
